Nick Diaz (26-9-0) is not particularly looking forward to fighting Robbie Lawler this weekend at UFC 266.
One of the top-ranked MMA fighters, Diaz is making his return to the octagon this Saturday for a rematch with Lawler. This will be the first time he is fighting in six years, and he spoke with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto about his frustration and disdain for the sport.
“I never enjoyed fighting. It’s just something that I do,” said Diaz, “It’s just what I do. I tried to get away from it, but really it’s kind of inevitable.”
He continued to tell ESPN, “All the people around me and all the money and the sponsors, they won’t let me get away from fighting. There’s things that I could do, but that’s not gonna work out. I might as well just go and take my punches. I don’t want to look back and say, ‘why did I not just do it?’ I don’t feel great. I feel great to fight, I don’t feel great about everything [else]. If I don’t do this, I don’t know how I’m going to feel about myself.”
Diaz previously fought Lawler in 2004, where he won by KO in the second round. He expressed wanting to fight Kamaru Usman instead of going up against Lawler for a second time, “This doesn’t make sense for me to go in and fight Robbie Lawler again. I don’t know why I’m doing this. This should not happen. Whoever set this up is an idiot,” he continued on to say, “I don’t know why I’m doing this. I don’t know why this happened. I should be fighting Kamaru Usman-and that’s it.”
What do you make of Nate Diaz’s opinion toward his bout with Robbie Lawler? Do you think there is a chance that a Diaz vs. Usman card could happen?
